Is the IRS Open? The IRS is open but on limited staffing, although according to a leaked memo, beginning April 27, 2020 they are scheduled to bring back approximately 10,000 employees in essential areas that deal with “mission-critical functions to handle work that must be conducted onsite.” These areas are related to the CARES Act stimulus and the current tax filing season which includes opening taxpayer correspondence, handling tax documents, and taking taxpayer telephone calls.
Is the IRS Still Actively Collecting Delinquent Taxes From Taxpayers by Issuing Collection Notices and Levies? The IRS has put a collection hold on accounts through July 15, 2020. This means they will not be issuing levies for delinquent taxes until after July 15th. However, we urge you to contact us now to discuss how to avoid collection action once the IRS’ temporary suspension of collection activity has expired. Click here for information on the IRS suspension of most collection activities due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Is the IRS Currently Conducting Tax Audits? The IRS is generally not starting new tax audits until at least July 15, 2020. There are a few exceptions. If you have received an audit notice, you should not ignore it. Instead, contact us to discuss how we can help. Existing audits will continue, but there are opportunities to defer responding to requests for information from the IRS.
When Are My Federal and California State Tax Returns Due?The IRS has issued an extension to file your individual income tax returns and pay your income taxes until July 15, 2020. The State of California has also extended their filing and payment due date to July 15, 2020. This is automatic and there is no need to file a request for an extension. If you need more time than that you can get a filing extension (but not a payment extension) through October 15th.
Foreign Bank Account FBARs are not due until October 15th, and there is no need to file an extension.
